By all accounts, Hayden Panettiere appeared to be entering a new chapter of her life.

The actress, who rose to international fame playing the seemingly indestructible cheerleader Claire Bennet on NBC’s “Heroes,” had spent much of her adult life navigating challenges far removed from the strength of the character she portrayed on screen.

Mental health struggles, postpartum depression, and addiction affected her personal life and, at times, interrupted the career she had begun before she was even a year old.

In recent years, however, Panettiere had become increasingly open about her experiences. In 2026, she addressed parts of her journey in a memoir and spoke publicly about the loss of her brother. At the same time, her professional career appeared to be moving forward again, with her latest film released in January.

Panettiere was pronounced dead Sunday afternoon at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina. Her death prompted an outpouring of grief from fans and people around the entertainment industry.

But while authorities have confirmed several details surrounding the circumstances of her death, important questions remain unanswered.

SHE SUFFERED CARDIAC ARREST AT A HOME WHERE SHE WAS TEMPORARILY STAYING

According to the Greenville County coroner’s office, emergency medical personnel responded to a 911 call at approximately 1:51 p.m. Sunday regarding a reported cardiac arrest.

The call came from the Judson Mill Lofts on Easley Bridge Road in Greenville, according to police.

Panettiere, a California resident, had been temporarily staying at the apartment complex. Authorities have not disclosed who lived at the residence.

When first responders arrived, they found Panettiere in cardiac arrest. Medics attempted to resuscitate her, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

She was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 2:32 p.m.

At this stage, cardiac arrest describes the immediate medical event reported by authorities, rather than necessarily explaining what caused it.

PANETTIERE’S REPORTED BOYFRIEND AND HIS BROTHER CALLED 911

A Greenville police officer who responded to the residence spoke with brothers Brian Hickerson and Zach Hickerson, according to a police report.

The report states that the brothers told officers they had called 911.

According to the document, Zach Hickerson identified Panettiere as his brother’s girlfriend.

Brian Hickerson reportedly showed the responding officer a bag containing Panettiere’s medications. However, significant portions of the police report have been redacted, including the list of medications.

The presence of medications at the scene does not, by itself, establish that they played a role in Panettiere’s death.

CNN has reported reaching out to Brian and Zach Hickerson for comment.

A POSSIBLE OVERDOSE WAS MENTIONED — BUT HAS NOT BEEN CONFIRMED

Audio from the emergency dispatch, obtained by Broadcastify, reportedly references a possible overdose and CPR in progress.

However, authorities have not confirmed that an overdose occurred.

This distinction is critical.

The mention of a possible overdose in dispatch audio is not the same as an official determination by investigators or the coroner. At this point, there is no publicly established evidence confirming that an overdose caused or contributed to Panettiere’s death.

The official cause remains pending.

AUTOPSY FOUND NO OBVIOUS SIGNS OF TRAUMA

An autopsy performed Monday found no signs of trauma that would have contributed to Panettiere’s death, according to the Greenville County coroner’s office.

However, the autopsy did not establish the final cause or manner of death.

Additional testing is still required, including toxicology testing. Such examinations are a standard part of many death investigations and can take weeks to complete.

Until those results are available, it would be premature to attribute Panettiere’s death to any particular substance, medication, or medical condition.

Her body was released Tuesday night to the mortuary selected by her family.
