The world watched with anticipation as white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney this afternoon, signaling the election of a new pope. Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States has been chosen as the 267th leader of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.

This landmark moment marks the first time in the Church’s nearly 2,000-year history that an American has been elected to the papacy. Born in Chicago, the 69-year-old Pope Leo XIV is known for his decades of missionary work in Peru and, most recently, for leading the influential Dicastery for Bishops within the Vatican.

The decision came on the second day of the conclave, after four rounds of voting by the 133 cardinal electors. The announcement was made from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica by Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti, who proclaimed the traditional words: “Habemus Papam!”

Appearing before thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square, the new pontiff offered his first apostolic blessing and a message of unity:

“May the peace of Christ be with you all. Let us walk together in faith and charity.”

Pope Leo XIV’s election signals a global Church increasingly open to diverse leadership. He is expected to build on the reformist legacy of his predecessors, addressing modern challenges with pastoral care and spiritual guidance.

The official inauguration Mass for Pope Leo XIV will be held in the coming days, with dignitaries and faithful from around the world expected to attend, ushering in a new era for the Catholic Church.
