82-year-old former president faces advanced cancer; hormone therapy to guide treatment

Former U.S. President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has already spread to his bones, according to an official statement released on May 18, 2025. The diagnosis came after Biden experienced persistent urinary symptoms that led to medical examinations and the discovery of a prostate nodule. A biopsy confirmed a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), indicating one of the most aggressive forms of the disease, with confirmed bone metastasis.
Despite the severity of the diagnosis, doctors emphasized that the cancer is hormone-sensitive, opening doors to effective treatment options such as androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Due to Biden’s age and the advanced stage of the disease, surgery is not being considered. He is currently undergoing further evaluation to determine the most suitable treatment plan.
In an emotional post on social media, Biden shared a heartfelt message alongside a photo with his wife, Jill Biden, and their cat Willow. He thanked the public for the outpouring of support and reflected on the universal impact of cancer, stating, “We are strongest in the broken places.”
The announcement triggered a wave of public support and sympathy from political figures across the spectrum. Former President Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Barack Obama were among those who extended their well wishes.
However, the timing of the public disclosure has sparked controversy, with medical experts and political commentators questioning why such an advanced cancer was not detected earlier—especially given Biden’s routine medical evaluations while in office. Some have raised concerns over transparency, suggesting the possibility that signs may have been overlooked or underreported.
The revelation comes nearly a year after Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race, citing health concerns and a challenging debate performance. His diagnosis adds urgency to the ongoing conversation about the health of aging political leaders and the critical importance of early detection—especially for prostate cancer, the most common cancer among men. In advanced stages like Biden’s, the five-year survival rate drops to just 28%.
Now facing one of the most personal battles of his life, Biden stands as a symbol of resilience and vulnerability—reminding the world once more of the human side of leadership.
