In a significant shift in U.S. trade policy, President Donald Trump declared that the United States will unilaterally set new tariff rates for numerous countries, citing the administration's limited capacity to negotiate individual trade agreements with all interested nations. This move follows the imposition of sweeping border taxes on all imports to the U.S. on April 2, 2025, dubbed "Liberation Day," though some of the strictest measures have since been withdrawn after economic backlash.

During a visit to the United Arab Emirates, Trump announced that letters detailing these tariff changes would be sent out in the coming weeks by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. The administration is focusing trade talks on major partners such as India, South Korea, Japan, and the European Union but acknowledges its limitations in engaging with all 150 interested countries simultaneously.

This announcement has sparked concerns among global trading partners and economists, who fear that these unilateral tariff changes could lead to retaliatory measures and disrupt international trade relations. The full impact of these new tariffs remains to be seen as the U.S. prepares to implement them in the coming weeks.
